The No. 4 Iowa Hawkeyes are a must-watch program right now. Star guard Caitlin Clark has captivated audiences for years with her impeccable play and "can't lose" attitude. Currently chasing the NCAA women's basketball all-time scoring record, she's been the center of attention every time she makes an appearance. FOX took that draw and upped it to 11 last night during Iowa's game against the Maryland Terrapins though.
Yes, that is an entire camera dedicated to following Clark around, streaming live on TikTok. That type of attention is only reserved for the mega, mega, mega stars like Shohei Ohtani or LeBron James. Clark has apparently reached that level of stardom as well, and she's not even a pro yet.
National superstar:Caitlin Clark is the face of women’s basketball. Will she be on the 2024 Olympic team?
Caitlin Clark spotlight cam
With a literal spotlight on her, Clark still performed incredibly well, dropping 38 points in the Hawkeyes' 93-85 win over Maryland. Clark did not have the most efficient performance, shooting only .448 from the field, her third-lowest percentage of any game where she scored at least 38 points. However, the only thing that matters of course, is getting the win.
She also recorded 12 assists, marking Clark's third double-double in her last five games.
What records is Clark chasing?
After last night's game against Maryland, Clark is just 66 points short of breaking the NCAA women's basketball's all-time scoring record, currently held by former Washington Huskies player Kelsey Plum. Plum is now a Las Vegas Ace, a two-time WNBA All-Star, and has won back-to-back championships with the team in 2022 and 2023.
Clark already has a multitude of records though and is chasing several others as well. Clark's 51 30-point games are the most by a Division 1 NCAA women's basketball player in the last 25 years. Her 11 40-point games are also the most by any player in that same span. While Clark does not hold the record for most career triple-doubles, she is second all-time in that category with 15. It is doubtful Clark will break that record though as it is currently held by Sabrina Ionescu with 26. Yes, Ionescu was built different.
Does Clark really deserve a whole camera?
You bet she does. Throughout the entirety of her college career, Clark has drawn record crowds. She's drawn new highs in television ratings for women's basketball, and has created numerous storylines all on her own. Finding anyone who drives the news cycle and television records like Clark has deserves anything she wants. She could turn into an ultimate diva who demands a bowl of M&M's at visiting locker rooms and the NCAA should meet those demands with an "Anything else?"
When will Clark play next?
The Hawkeyes' next game is set for Thursday, Feb. 8 at 9 p.m. ET. at home against Penn State. The game will air on the Big Ten Network. The network has not announced any intention to follow in FOX's footsteps with a dedicated Clark cam.
