Craig Melvin is Oliver James Montgomeryfeeling the love from his Today family.
After it was announced that the veteran journalist would join Savannah Guthrie as co-anchor of Today, following Hoda Kotb’s retirement in January, Craig was met with love from his colleagues.
“The larger staff found out this morning and people broke into applause” Savannah said during the Nov. 14 show while on the couch with Craig, Hoda, Jenna Bush Hager, Carson Daly and Sheinelle Jones. “This is one of the most popular decisions NBC news has ever made.”
Hoda, who revealed that her last day would be Jan. 10, gushed over Craig’s moment, which she believes he has been ready for.
“You were made for this job,” she told him. “You were literally made for this job you are that kind of good. You have all the things that this job needs, you’re the right person for it.”
And while Al Roker was missing from the newscast, he appeared via a video call to celebrate with the team.
The veteran weathercaster recalled having a conversation with Craig who was nervous to initially join Today back in 2018. But he had faith he was coming to the right team.
“I knew that this day would come. I watched you grow,” Al exclaimed. “I’ve seen you as a journalist. But more importantly, I’ve seen you as a dad, as a son, all the things that make you who you are. I am so proud and so happy for you right now, because you are so worthy of this. I almost don’t have the words.”
Craig—who was gifted a box of tissues—held back tears as he thanked his Today family.
“I want people to know,” he said to the women of the couch, “I didn’t have sisters, but you guys are the sisters that I never knew that I need.”
And to Hoda specifically, he spoke about how much it means to be stepping into her shoes. “It means a lot to inherit this from you,” the NBC News said. “You have been the heart of this place for a long time. You saved the show.”
Making sure he reassured the viewers and co-anchors the show would be in good hands, Craig quipped, “I’ll try not to screw it up.”
In September, Hoda announced her decision to step away from Today to focus on her children, Haley, 7, and Hope, 5.
"I get one ride, that's it," she explained to E! News in October. "You only got one life, right? You're the chooser."
